The first step is to realize that personality is a construct that enables us to productively interact with our perception of reality.

The second step is to realize that, for the most part, we have allowed external people and events to create this construct, and this perception, for us.

The third step is to break down that construct and shed all notions of self and ego, achieving a pure state of innocence and openness.

The final step is to rebuild a personality of our own choosing that will best meet our goals within the context of our chosen reality.

Now, if anyone has any tips for step three, I'm all ears.

UPDATE: “A New Earth” by Eckhart Tolle provides the keys for the third step, after which the final step isn't really necessary, or rather, it happens naturally and without effort.
